First, we need to uninstall any current anti-virus programs that you have installed on your computer. (i.e. Macafee, Norton, etc...) If you need help, please click on the appropriate buttons below. If not, please continue to Step One when you have uninstalled your current anti-virus program.
Step One: Now that your computer is up-to-date and you have uninstalled any existing anti-virus programs, let's go ahead and turn on your windows firewall.
XP Users:
1. Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.




2. On the General tab, click On (recommended).




3. Click OK. Your firewall is now actively protecting your computer!
Vista Users:
1. Click the Start Icon. In the search box type firewall.cpl and hit enter.




2. Near the top-left of the console, click "Turn Firewall On or Off"




3. Click "Continue" if prompted.




4. A new dialog box will appear. Click "On", then click okay.




5. You can now close all open programs currently running on your PC.
Step Two: Now we need to download the free version of AVG Anti-virus. Simply click the button below to download the software via download.com. When the program finishes downloading, simply follow the prompts to install your new software. You may be asked to restart your computer once installation is complete, please do so.
You computer is now protected and you do not have to waste another penny on security software!
Installing the free version of AVG and turning on Windows Firewall.
First, we need to make sure that Windows Firewall is available on your computer. The easiest way to check is to try and pull up the firewall console. Please click on "Start", then click on "Run". In the open dialog box, please type "firewall.cpl" and click on "OK". Please note that Windows Vista Users can simply type "firewall.cpl" in the "Start Search" box and hit "enter".
If the firewall console appears, then you are good to go; simply close the box. If you get an error message, then it's time to update your computer.

Check for updates on Windows Update
Please note that dial-up users can expect to have extremely long download times using windows update. It is conceivable to see download times in excess of 8 hours if your computer has not been updated in long time.
- To check for updates on Windows Update, follow these steps:
- Click Express (Recommended).
- If your computer is up to date, Windows XP SP3 will be one of the updates that is automatically selected. Click Install. If your computer is not up to date, Windows Update will offer some other updates that you have to install first. Install those, and then repeat steps 1 and 2 to obtain Windows XP SP3.
- For Windows XP SP3, review and accept the Microsoft Software License Terms.
- Windows XP SP3 will be downloaded to your computer, and the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Setup Wizard will help you install it.
