First off, welcome to the new HES E-Newsletter. I know that many of you were having problems with the scrolling announcement box. With the number of announcements and other information that we post each week, posting everything separately would take up a lot of space on the home-page.
You can think of our new E-Newsletter as a secondary homepage, filled with information that pertains to our school.
Okay, now that's out of the way. Safe Surfing on the Internet has quickly become a major issue around the country and in our area. The Internet can be a great resource for you and your children if it is used safely and responsibility.
The only way to ensure that your children are using the computer responsibly is to get involved during their computer time. Most of the parent's reading this have children in the 3rd and 4th grade, which is a great time to start teaching them how to surf the web safely.
Below are a few important reminders:
Always check any website before your children are allowed to roam free on it. Try to explore the website yourself and look for any suspicious links or advertisements.
Explain to your children about online advertisements, as this is one of the biggest problems around today. Some, but certainly not all, advertisements can lead to annoying Pop-ups, Spyware and even Malware and Viruses.
For more information about computer problems, you can visit our Computer Help Page or Click Here for more information about Internet Safety.
Thanks to everyone for making our second annual Winter Princess and Miss Hayden Elementary pageants a success! This is a huge fundraiser for our school, and it's one of our favorites, just because all of the girls look absolutely beautiful! There is a link on the website for photos from the pageant. As soon as we know how much money was made, we'll let everyone know. This money is essential for paying the endless number of bills that the school has to pay every month (water, telephone, garbage, pest control, cleaning supplies, copiers, paper - the list goes on and on!) Know that we are good stewards with the money that we are given and fundraiser. We believe our kids deserve the best, and we try very hard to provide that for them. We have a great community that supports its schools, and we are very appreciative of what you do for us!!!

HES Playground & Field Guidelines
The baseball & softball seasons are definitely in full-swing! With this time of year, comes increased traffic to our playground area and the new fields behind the school. Please keep in mind that countless hours and a great deal of money have been spent on these facilities. Dr. Vail-Smith has asked that I pass along some guidelines about using both the playground and new field areas:
The playground is open only during daylight hours.
Playground equipment was designed for children, not adults.
Trash should be removed by anyone who uses the facilities. We do not have staff to clean this area.
Vehicles must be parked outside the gate. Violation of this rule will result in individuals and/or groups being banned from use of the facilities.
People who are walking have priority on the walking track. Bikes, scooters, etc. must give way to those walking.
Please keep in mind that the playground was designed for 3rd & 4th graders. Smaller children should not be allowed to use this area without close adult supervision.
Misuse and damage of the facilities may result in charges being filed with the police.
As you have probably guessed, this information is being posted because we have already had instances of misuse. Please remember all of the hard work that went into these areas and follow the above guidelines at all times.
The effective teacher of reading:
Considering the “what” and “how”of instruction
"Submitted by Mrs. Williamson, Reading Coach, HES"
It is generally accepted that the teacher plays a major role in determining the effectiveness of a reading instructional program. Duffy-Hester (1999) perhaps stated it best when she noted the role the teacher played in helping children learn to read: “I am convinced that the teacher is more important and has a greater impact than any single, fixed reading program, method, or approach.” What teaching strategies must teachers of reading be able to perform and how are these strategies effectively applied in teaching children to read?”

I am glad to see that so many of our students have signed up for the St. Jude Math-a-Thon. You will not only be helping the children of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, but each of you will benefit as well. The Math-a-Thon problems will help you become better Math Masters, and the money you collect from your sponsors will make you feel proud.
Everyone working on the Math-a-Thon should be signing up as many sponsors as possible. Ask your friends, neighbors, parents, and relatives to sponsor you, the more sponsors you obtain, the more money you will raise to save children’s lives. If you have not had a chance, you can create your own web page at www.mathathon.org. Do not go door to door to get sponsors. Remember, if you raise $35, you’ll receive a Math-A-Thon T shirt and a free Six Flags pass. Prizes will also be awarded for each student who raises $125, $250, and $500. Remember to check out some of the great prizes you can win on www.mathathon.org. Please remember that money from your sponsors must be returned to school by March 27.
